  Let your imagination soar as you learn about kites! Math, Physics, History, and Social Studies are all part of the wonderful world of kites. Students will love the Japanese Fighter Kites and be enthralled to learn how kites helped us with radio, airplanes and in the military! This passport is filled with different styles of kites, the parts of a kite and even how to build you own! Zoe Ludski reflects on breezy days with her dad who gave her her first kite, as she celebrates National Kite Day with your class!  

Professor Eric Waggoner explains the making of an American classic. He examines how social circumstances influence literature. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote about the extravagant elite lifestyle of Americans during the 1920's.

 

   Join us for our Book Club! series featuring Edgar Allan Poe: Master of Madness! Poe is the inventor of the detective story, father of the psychological thriller and a master American poet. Our session will discuss the life and times of the author and the short story "Tell Tale Heart".

  In this unit, students are encouraged to learn about the culture and history of Hawaii, while applying the importance of cultural pride to the students’ individual heritage, local community, and state history.   Ah, the joys of illustrating! Students will learn about the art and craft of illustrating and graphic design. Students will explore the way technology tools have re-defined the illustration process. After participating in this Passports, students will have greater appreciation and understanding of the importance of illustrations.   Students will be transported to the western coast of Africa as they learn a welcome dance from Liberia and a social dance from Ghana. Fanga is a popular dance used to welcome visitors. Both dances feature songs that can be taught and sung in the traditional African call and response style.

  Can you imagine being in charge of building the Ancient Egyptian pyramids, or designing the tallest building in the world? If you choose a career as an architect, you just may be responsible for building sky scrapers, museums, homes or stadiums!   Experience the power of the human-animal bond by learning about guide dogs for the blind. Students will truly understand the value of teamwork. Students will be exposed to the daily challenges blind people experience and the accommodations they must make to successfully function in society.   Broadway actor Adam Brazier speaks to students about getting to know and understand Shakespeare. Students will look at specific pieces of text and how an actor uses the script to understand more about a play and a character.
