Session Descriptions:
Session 1 - Review of Differentiated Instruction Strand #1
Participants in this session will review the definition of differentiation as well as some terms related to it. They will also review the role of objectives, assessment, and management in differentiated classrooms. They will then discuss the strategies presented in the first strand.
Session 2 - Some Useful Tools for Differentiating Instruction Participants in this session will discuss Bloom’s Taxonomy and Tomlinson’s Equalizer and how these tools apply to differentiated instruction. They will use these models to identify the differences between given tasks and questions and to modify tasks. Participants in this session will also discuss concept-based teaching and its relationship to brain research. They will practice relating topics to larger concepts and creating generalizations about concepts. They will also discuss how to use this tool when differentiating instruction.
Session 3 - Curriculum Compacting and Independent Study Participants in this session will discuss the rationale for Curriculum Compacting and identify the steps in it. They will also discuss how they might know that compacting is needed. They will then look at several examples of independent studies that can be used in conjunction with Compacting.
Session 4- Think-Tac-Toes
Participants in this session will discuss the effective use of Think-Tac-Toes in the classrooms and will look at examples of them in different subject areas. They will then begin to brainstorm possibilities for their own Think-Tac-Toes.
Session 5 - Conclusions
Participants in this session will revisit the terms student readiness, student interest, and student learning profile and will discuss which strategies are designed to meet which types of student differences. They will also identify “non-negotiable” characteristics of differentiated instruction and classrooms.
