Angelica Lindsey brings Black History Month alive with a Passport on 4 famous African Americans who made a remarkable impact on our world. Learn about Madam C.J. Walker who is often said to be the first self-made millionaire who was female and American. Madam Walker was a pioneer of black hair care products and cosmetics and set standards in the African American community for ethical business practices and community giving. Meet the Father of Peanut Butter, George Washington Carver, who discovered over 300 uses for peanuts. Carver was the first black student at Simpson College in Iowa where he began his studies in science, agriculture and botany. His numerous accomplishments include revolutionizing southern agriculture and developing industrial applications for farm crops. Students will also be introduced to Mae Jemison, an astronaut who broke the color and gender barriers. Mae Jemison became the first female African American astronaut in 1988 – only the fifth black astronaut in NASA’s history. Ben Carson is an African American neurosurgeon who became the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins hospital at age 33. He was also the lead surgeon who traveled to South Africa to separate conjoined twins. Join us as Angelica helps students gain a greater understanding of Black History, the celebration, and the people who have made an impact on our lives.
