In this series of Passports: Adventure in Learning, students will explore the literary elements of rhymes and repeated sounds. Students will listen to Kenn Nesbitt, a published writer, as he reads his funny poetry and discusses what a rhyme is, as well as what a rhyme is not. As students actively participate in funny and entertaining rhymes and poems with Kenn, they will develop a greater understanding of the sounds and syllables of letters and words. Students who participate in this Passport: Adventures in Learning will improve both reading and writing and skills. Students will explore different types of poetry in each session, and write poems together with Kenn. Students will then have the opportunity to practice the new writing challenge on their own in the classroom. Students will expand their understanding of the genre of poetry by exploring the lives and works of various contemporary and classic poets. Kenn Nesbitt, a published poet himself, will share information about each highlighted poet, their style of poetry, and read samples of their work. Then participating students will the opportunity to discuss various aspects of the authors and their work. Use the curriculum guides below to prepare students for the session and to extend their learning after participating.
